Ice and Fire: Vast Volitarus deck review

The fabulous achroma discord community have been sharing decks with each other over the past few months, and I thought I’d post a couple that I like.

First up, a Draco Planum deck, courtesy of player Torus:

As Torus penned a great write-up on discord, here he is:

“This is a location-heavy deck backed up by The Lost Fairies’ free actions. The win conditions you should be playing for are either drawing a load of cards through Research to stack up Vast Volitarus, or a mega chroma storehouse play.

This deck works especially well into character-heavy decks like magus elite and some troll decks, which allows you to use minima draco and chromatic extinction to their full potential. Outside of these instances, this deck isn’t great in 1v1s. Into decks that can steal locations, do not hesitate to erase your own cards, as you can easily dig them back with draco graveyard. Also do not hesitate to trade expensive cards for the same reason.

A key strategy is playing actions after you resolve, ESPECIALLY if you have Lost Fairies out. This allows you to resolve and play Chromatic Extinction, but still gain the benefit of any characters you have out. Prying Eyes is only to be used normally if you somehow know what your opponent has, otherwise Lost Fairies it on whoever has the largest hand, or trade it. Remember that doing this will allow you to play 5 cards on your turn so stealing something with another effect is major value. For example, stealing Murky Manor to find and then deploy either Impius Drake or Chromatic Extinction means you’ve deployed 6 cards and potentially messed with your opponent.”

I’m slightly surprised by the lack of a second Restless Research, or the endlessly researching Rummage, but I do like the idea of using The Lost Fairies as a back-up value card in what is otherwise a Vast Volitarus/Research deck. Also note (as Torus did in a later message) that as Vast Volitarus is likely to be made heroic soon, you cannot play Mirror Sanctum to copy it.

I do love Vast Volitarus and really like this build. I’ve never tried out The Lost Fairies (I’m a fan of Tenebris for all round impact) but I like the way they provide a lot of value from the more expensive actions in the deck. Thanks again to Torus for sharing his deck with the community.
