Legendaries of Altari

on

I recently conducted a little poll on the achroma discord, to see what everyone’s favourite legendaries from The Last Snow Dragons of Altari were. Here’s the results:

Clearly there is a lot of love for Hularla. At +4, this is one of the highest gain cards in the game, and with the advantage that the ice god can attack but cannot be attacked by opponents, plus the once per turn FREEZE, it’s not much of a surprise that this tops our ranks. Mist Morgana comes in at a closeish second, and while I don’t think this card is especially consistently powerful, it is a lot of fun. Kocora Bri gets only 2 votes, which may reflect the fact that he is just a solid character, and nothing particularly out of the ordinary.

However, it’s Crackle, Bugir, and Boommarshka I want to focus on.

Crackle is the ony legendary with an ability that is affected by FREEZE. Given the popularity of the mechanic, the fact this only got one vote is a bit of a surprise. That +X could quite quickly become pretty huge, especially in multiplayer if you’re running Harusk.

Bugir is the HUNT legendary and has a really interesting mechanic: you get to put the character targeted by the HUNT into your hand. This could be really powerful with the right character, either to get a repeat of an ACTION, or to steal and opponent’s card. It gets around PROTECTION too. I guess the main issue with it is it’s slow, but in a HUNT deck you would probably be running 2 copies of Tactical Ambush which could make this character much more effective:

Finally, Boommarshka was the character I was probably most intrigued to try out prior to release. If anything, I thought this character would be too powerful, but in play testing I’ve found it to be not so great. However, I think that is mainly down to the fact that Last Snow Dragons palettes just don’t run many actions. There’s cards like Wolfgang Woods which is a location that erases a character, plus Valli Caves and many other FREEZE mechanics have been rolled into non-Action cards. This means that preventing the opponent from playing Actions isn’t actually that powerful. One of my most recent Draco Planum decks had just 2 actions in the entire deck.

However, give it a few months, and I wouldn’t be surprised if King Boomer becomes quite a decent palette. Preventing the opponent’s Dark Rainbow, HAIM Shard Cache, all runes, Full Palette, and many more is extremely powerful, not to mention the fact that it makes Boomer very hard to kill.

To finish, here is a Boomer deck I made recently and have tested a couple of times. It’s a lot of fun, but quite obviously is much more strong against Action heavy decks:

It may seem surprising that this is an achrom deck, but that’s because I wanted to give myself the maximum chance of getting Boomer on the table, which meant running 2 runes, Kaunan (red) and Algiz (yellow), and (almost) no cards with those colours. I am playing Jali, which can be found by Algiz, but I’ll take that for 2 shards.

I’ve got a wide suite of steal locations, but not the Siege of Draco Temple, because that has a red shard. I’ve got two key Freeze locations, The Valli Caves and Blizzari Plains, plus a few strong drakes. Finally, I have The Reader and Draco Planum Library which make quite a nice combo to draw key cards mid-turn, or I can use The Reader on the opponent’s deck for a bit of extra control. Wolfgang Woods is there because a bit threat to Boomer is attacks, plus Cintimani, HAIM and Draco Graveyard for good tech.

If anyone else tries out the unloved Legendaries of the set, let me know. I’d love to see some decklists using Crackle, Boomer, or Bugir.
