Rise of the Realm Runners Spoilers

With about a month to go until Rise of the Realm Runners arrives in our hands, Realm Runner Studios have kindly given me 2 exclusive spoilers to show off from this set.
Without further ado, here they are:

Contaminated Ballistics Belt is a spirata planum uncommon object (formally known as object of power). For 3Δ you play this on an opponent’s character. That character can no longer attack (which is good on its own) and during that player’s resolve step the lose -2Δ. Sure, it requires some timing to have a character on the opponent’s canvas with a resolve effect you don’t mind them keeping, but I would say that is going to be the case most of the time, so I don’t think this isn’t going to be prohibitively situational.

-2Δ on one card that gets resolved once per round normally costs 3Δ+, for example Curdle Village or Umbra Aqueous, so this is pretty much on curve, even if you have to play it on an opponent’s character (situational) and you have to wait for the opponent’s resolve step to get the -2Δ (so it could be erased before it does anything). Achrom Bomb is an exception to the cost curve, as it’s essentially -2Δ for 2Δ, but being an object you play on your own characters, it is more vulnerable.

This card is going to have some nice staying power. It gets erased if the opponent erases the attached character, sure, but they’re not necessarily going to want to do that, as that means erasing their own character and spending Δ for the privilege. They could just erase the object directly, but when I started looking through the database I realised there just aren’t that many cards that affect objects, and even fewer that you’re likely to actually include in a deck. Even the boardwipe king Samr Smash won’t work because that only affects cards on the opponent’s canvas. The best (i.e. only) cards I can think of to deal with this card are:

Dismantle and Mystical Malfunction are nice cards, but essentially won’t make it into players decks unless objects become a lot more common (which they may do) or you’re playing a funky Hex Clunker/Cintimani Stone build (I discussed this idea here). Carmella and Bounce are strong effects which are extremely likely to be in decks anyway, though my favourite play is definitely Role Reversal. As these 3 cards are all spirata planum, it’s clear Contaminated Ballistics Belt is going to be weaker against this realm. You should certainly only play it against a spirata deck if you have a way of coping with a Role Reversal play.

One archetype however is going to be nigh on impossible to hurt with this card, and that’s drakes, thanks to the sacrifice keyword. If this gets played on a drake player, chances are they’ll sacrifice it to some good effect before it gets resolved even once. We’ve already seen some extremely nice sacrifice support cards from The Rise of the Realm Runners, so I would expect this archetype to be more popular. The lesson is: don’t play this card against a drakes deck.

Next up, Roll with the Punches follows the brisgavi theme of attack that we’ve seen so far. Being able to avoid “summoning sickness” and attack the turn your characters hit the canvas is a strong effect at the right time, and compounded with RAGE could result in a lot of erased characters from the opponent’s canvas out of nowhere. However, I feel like 2Δ, a card from hand, and a deploy slot just to be able to attack right away is a bit too specific to allow this card to make the cut in most 30 card decks, unless we see more support for attacking, like on Brisgavi Raider.

Thank you to Realm Runner Studios for providing me with these spoilers. I hope you liked them. For those people keeping track, here’s all the cards from RotRR, coloured by realm, and the names of those cards we’ve seen already.
